When I step into the apartment, I immediately back out. I shake my head, unable to determine if Iâm hallucinating or if someone has been having a party at my place.
I go back to the car and get the 9 iron out of the trunk. I walk back to the apartment slowly and push the door open wide with my foot, swinging the club around as I walk through the entryway to the squeaky clean living room.
My pile of dirty laundry is gone along with the rotting pizza slices and my collection of empty beer cans. To top it all, someone has vacuumed and opened the windows. The fucking question is who and why.
I find him spread out on the bed when I kick the bedroom door open and barge into the room with my club raised and ready to strike.
âJesus fucking Christ,â he curses as he springs up to his feet. Heâs in his boxer briefs and from the distraught look on his face, heâs been napping.
âTomas, what the fuck?â I say, lowering the club. âHow did you get in here?â
âYour landlady let me in,â he says, patting his messy hair down.
âThat old hag? Sheâs not known to do favors.â
âExactly,â he says with an evil smirk.
The fucking lunatic almost made me kill him and even worse, I would have bent my 9 iron. âWhen did you get to town?â
âJust flew in from Brussels. This place was horrific. I thought Iâd find you dead under a pile of Dominoâs boxes.â
Heâs been working hard on his muscled arms and chest. There must be an extremely wealthy woman somewhere heâs planning to seduce.
âI take it the Zen life is over?â I say pointing at his six pack.
âYeah, it was good while it lasted,â he says with a yawn.
I met Tomas when I was nineteen on a trip to Vegas. Already on the make, he was successfully scamming money from a stable of married rich women. We became instant buddies.
Although only two years older than me, he became my mentor and showed me the trick of getting by without having a real job. My decadent life could not hold a candle to the supernova of his debauchery.
We were living the life of a couple immoral princes when one day he walked in and changed everything. He had decided to leave all the drifting and gambling and whoring behind. He had decided to turn to eastern philosophy, meditation and holistic ingestion about a year ago.
Itâs obvious heâs done with that because the vanity of non-practical muscle building has obviously been his key ambition of the previous months. He looks like a fucking professional wrestler dozing off on my dirty mattress.
One thing Iâve always admired about Tomas is that he never loses his cool and he never throws in the towel. Heâs loyal and heâs a survivor.
âWhatâs going on, slum dog?â he says mystified. âYou look like crap. Why do you live like an urchin? I taught you better than this.â
âIâm trying to unlearn all that shit,â I say, lowering my head.
